The Foghorn Stringband, if you ask me, is one of the greatest new things in old-time music. all they have to do is play, and the power surges straight through your own chest. they are supertight, are major monster players, and they don't do anything weird to the music -- they let their own musicality and the tunes speak for themselves.

Please call the cops on these guys. Remember the Unknown Comic?
September 3rd, 2007 We landed in Philly and went over to Rafe Stephanini's house. Did you know his license plate says "Yeehoo"? One of guys thought that was Italian for "Yeehaw." Smartass! As soon as we were in the house, Rafe opened some beers. And as soon as they were opened, he asked if we wanted to go. Rafe, hold on! We want to look at old Galax photos hanging on the walls. Where's the pasta with beans? So we go over to the party and there's not much going on, just some good leftover grub in the kitchen and Uncle Earl cooking meth in the basement. Why are all these old-time bands so stuck in the 90's when it comes to drugs? But who am I to say anything, I still drink entire bottles Robotussin DM and hope I can make it past the half-hour mark without puking. Now that's a party, hoss. We got a few tunes going, but there wasn't much staying power here. Once the girls ran out of matches, they all started crying uncontrollably, until Pete showed them how the kids in his fifth grade class make do with a nail file and a magnifying glass. But it was time to go anyway, so we went back to Rafe's.
I was the first to bed. Where did those girls get their recipe? It had no effect on me. I awoke to find Sammy and Rafe playing tunes in the kitchen while still in their boxers. They must have gone to bed at some point, right? We high-tailed it over to the Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival in Jersey, barely making it only to find out that we were going on early. Lost Highway's bus had burned down, which made the traffic on the Memorial Bridge seem fortunate. We played a solid set, even without Caleb's unmatched talents with mandolin and voice. People like us! You know, often after a set in which I sing more than 1 song on lead, I encounter this conversation afterward: "I noticed you're singing more these days." "Yes, I have been." "It sounds good!" "Well thank you!" "But you know, that Caleb, now he's got a really good voice, doesn't he?" Finally for once I didn't have to hear that one.
We met up with Frank Sollivan, from Country Current. He and his wife Leah are pals we know from Juneau, AK. They had some delicious home cooking (which included smoked salmon, of course), and some more tunes. Frank had his grandfather's fiddle, which was loud and clear, like Frank's own playing. The man has the slickest tone; what a monster. The nighttime set was also a good one, and it was good to lay it down in the home state. Can't say I thought I'd ever play old-time music in my home state, since when I left it 17 years ago, I didn't even know old-time music existed. Maybe 17 years from now all my old-time cd's will be in the same box in the attic as the U2 albums I wore out back then, and I'll have moved on to something that right now I don't even know exists. I wonder what that could be? We shared some moonshine with a group of cloggers from eastern Tennessee, and listened to their stories from the old days of the 70's. The future is a long way off.
